LITTLE VALLEY — When everything is added up, removing ash trees and select other species from Cattaraugus County-owned forests could net the county up to $1.5 million over the next couple of years.
That estimate is from the Cattaraugus County Legislator Joseph Snyder of Ischua who last year pushed to inventory endangered ash trees in county forests as a first step toward managing the county forests again.
The emerald ash borer, an invasive species which was first detected in New York in the Randolph area off Interstate 86 almost 10 years ago, will quickly spread through a stand of ash trees, often killing them within a few years.
